We hope you enjoy this post from our archives. It originally posted in August, 2012.
I said to my husband the other night, “Wouldn’t it be neat if we could memorize a sermon when we hear it and like a computer pull it out when we need it.” I was referring to the great messages we had heard at a Bible conference we had recently attended. But upon further reflection I realized that it is by the grace and mercy of God that we don’t memorize everything we see and hear. Think of all the traumatic experiences in life that we would remember in great detail, and we would never be able to erase from our memory. It is good that we have to make an effort to memorize information like Bible verses. The older I get, the more difficult it is to remember things (more about that later.)
God tells us in His word some things we need to remember.
- Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
- Luke 17:32 Remember Lot's wife.
- John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
- Hebrews 13:3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.
- Hebrews 13:7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
- Jude 17-18 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
- Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
- Revelation 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Here is a very cute poem that goes with this thing of remembering. Hope you enjoy it!
Shall I? - Or - Have I?
Just a line to say I'm living
That I'm not among the dead.
Though I'm getting more forgetful
And more mixed up in the head.
For sometimes I can't remember
When I stand at foot of stair,
If I must go up for something
Or I've just come down from there.
And before the frig', so often
My poor mind is filled with doubt,
Have I just put food away, or
Have I come to take some out?
And there's times when it is dark out
With my nightcap on my head,
I don't know if I'm retiring
Or just getting out of bed.
So if it's my turn to write you
There's no need of getting sore,
I may think I have written
And don't want to be a bore.
So, remember...I do love you,
And I wish that you were here;
But now, it is nearly mail time
So I must say: "Goodbye Dear".
Here I stand beside the mailbox,
With my face so very red,
Instead of mailing you this letter...
I have opened it instead....
